After volunteering for a cause and planting around 40 saplings last week, this time IMCPune team was looking to take a break and travel to a hilly region. It is always a good idea to join IMCPune team. There are many favorite destinations among those traveling from Pune. But the team was looking for a one day trek and finally decided to go to Rajmachi Fort. Rajmachi is located around 70kms from Pune and can be covered easily in a day. There are two ways to get to Rajmachi Fort, one from Karjat which is a tough uphill trek and another from Lonavala (the one we chose) which is a 12kms dirt trail.
12kms trail to Rajmachi Fort
IMC Pune team started the journey at 6am from Pune to Lonavala. Took a diversion before Khandala Ghat to reach the base point of the trek. We managed to reach there by 9 am, parked our vehicle and immediately started ascending.
Flat but muddy routes
The trail is flat and muddy. We started walking at a good pace and took a regular water breaks. It was fun trekking in the cloudy morning while surrounded by forest, waterfalls and beauty of the fort.
3 hours of continuous walk
Though the roads were tough with a stone wall on one side and valley on the other. We started the journey with zeal and eagerness but after 2 hours, few of us started struggling. We recalled our final goal and started climbing again. After 3 hours of continuous walk, we reached the base of Rajmachi village and ordered for lunch. We knew the food preparation will take around an hour so we started exploring the fort.
Rajmachi has two fortified peaks
There we got to know that Rajmachi appears as a two peaks , Shrivardhan and Manoranjan. Both of the forts can easily be done in a day but we picked Shrivardhan fort. A 15min trek over the narrow mountain range took us to Shrivardhan fort.
Shrivardhan fort is located at the height of 3250 feet and points like Matheran and Karnala can be seen. We took around an hour to explore the fort completely.
We had our lunch by 3pm and started descending from the same route. It started raining suddenly and the route became more slippery. Though the return journey was more beautiful in the rain but we’re struggling to reach our destinations. Each step was painful for few of us.
We finally reached back to the base. We had a great time trekking. We’re glad that IMCPune founder Mr. Sunny Kanade initiated the trip as the long walk always help you to know your fellow teammates better.
